About National School Sport Week

Bank of Scotland National School Sport Week is a week-long sporting celebration for primary and secondary schools – from 7 – 11 June 2010.

Last year over 10,500 and three million young people took part in England and Wales, and this year Scottish schools will be taking part for the first time.

Registered schools are given all the resources they need to generate interest and activities for pupils of all ages. It not only helps fulfil school objectives, but can be used across the curriculum to create excitement around the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

92% of schools who took part in 2009 said the week inspired more pupils to do more sport.

Everyone benefits
Taking part in this fantastic national event achieves more than you might think:

  • Raises the profile of sport among young people, parents and colleagues.
  • Demonstrate your commitment to increasing participation in sport and physical activity.
  • Engage pupils in your health and well-being outcomes.
  • Celebrates your school’s sporting achievements over the last 12 months.

Be part of it!
At the end of the week there will be a huge nationwide showcase by all participating schools, celebrating millions of young people across the UK trying a new sport. At 12.20pm on Friday 11 June 2010, Young Ambassadors will ask all young people in the school to demonstrate the new sport they have learnt. For further information, see your Schools Planning Booklet and you will also receive updates on this website and through your local Young Ambassadors.

71% of pupils who took part in 2009 tried a new sport.

The Olympic and Paralympic Sports
The sports that make up the Olympic and Paralympic Games provide an exciting backdrop to Bank of Scotland National School Sport Week. We hope you will encourage your young people try new sports throughout the week and we have suggested a week of activity focused on trying new sports that is detailed in your Schools Planning booklet. Learn more about these sports by clicking here.

The Olympic and Paralympic Games Values
Core to the entire week are the values of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Whether on the sports field or in the maths class, pupils are asked to think about the values and make a Sports Pledge to demonstrate them. When these pledges are complete, students are presented with a Bank of Scotland National School Sport Week certificate. Read more about the values and Sports Pledges
